R507 is an azeotropic HFC (Hydrofluorocarbon) refrigerant blend consisting of R125 (50%) and R143a (50%). It was developed as a high-performance replacement for R502 and R22, primarily used in low and medium-temperature commercial and industrial refrigeration systems.
General Characteristics
- Environmental Profile: It has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP = 0). However, it has a high Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3985, which subjects it to strict environmental regulations and phase-down programs.
- Safety Classification: Rated as A1 (Non-toxic and non-flammable) by ASHRAE.
- Azeotropic Behavior: R507 is a true azeotrope with Zero Temperature Glide. This means its composition remains identical in both liquid and vapor phases, allowing for easy recharging after a leak without affecting system performance.
- Lubrication: It is compatible only with POE (Polyolester) synthetic oils; it cannot be used with traditional mineral oils.
- Performance: It offers slightly better efficiency and capacity in some applications compared to R404A, while maintaining very similar operating pressures.
